| By Mercedes Manzolillo BETHEL -Dick Yeomans, the
Bethel Highway Superintendent, will
be retiring in December after 10 years
in that role.
Yeomans, 69, says, "It's time I
took it easy for a while."
He wants to do some traveling,
including in Alaska next summer.
He also collects antiques, which
he said should keep him busy. He also
likes hunting and fishing and working
around the house.
Yeomans said he has to get out and
enjoy himself now.
Not that he didn't enjoy his job as
highway superintendent.
"It was a good experience - most
of the people are real good," said
Yeomans.
As highway superintendent, Yeomans had to oversee all the manual
equipment, maintain the roads, do a
lot of paperwork and clean ditches.
Yeomans is at the shop in Kauneonga Lake at 6 in the morning
every day and gets his men started at 7 a.m. If the weather didn't hold
out, there was always plenty to do around the shop, according to Yeomans. |
When asked if he would miss his
job, he said, "I probably will miss it,
but I'll get over it."
Yeomans also owned a garage
called Dick Yeomans & Sons on
Horseshoe Lake Road in the Town of
Bethel. For 33 years, he was an operating engineer.
Now, Yeomans would like to see
Lynden Lilly as his successor.
"I would like to endorse him
myself," he said.
Yeomans hopes everyone is happy
when he leaves, since he's going on
to other worthwhile pursuits. However, he said he hasn't gotten everything done
that he would have liked because of the economy crunch this year.
Nonetheless, he wants to thank everyone for their support
during the last five elections.
He wants to especially thank his men for all their hard work
and help over the years.
