RT17B being Built
This is a photo of RT 17B under
construction in 1962. The view that you see here is looking Eastward toward Monticello
N.Y. .The picture was taken standing at the beginning of Pine Grove Road leading into
Smallwood. This new Highway was a signal that the days of the "Mom and Pop"
Bungalow Colonies and small Hotels were rapidly coming to an end.The ability to travel
longer distances quickly, coupled with the aging of the traditional Summer vacationers ,
led to a steady decline of seasonal guests. The area is now in a growth posture with many
new up scale homes being built. Light industry is also being encouraged to provide a
broader spectrum of economic possibilities."

This is a picture of one of the last remaining
highway milestones from the days of the Newburgh Cochecton Turnpike, now State Rt. 17B.
The years and weather have long since obliterated the information carved onto it's
surface. It can still be see in it's original location. It stands about 250 feet East of
Beachwood Club Road on 17B just across the road from McKean Realty. The stonework was
placed around it when 17B was built to help preserve it
