ENTERTAINMENT? Par excellence! Other areas have their summer theatres. Sullivan County has its summer theatres, too-but they are overwhelmed by a tide of entertainers that saturates every major hotel in the central part of the County with the brilliance and glamour of stardom. "Summer stock" is, in this neck of the vacationland woods, just one little item in a breath-taking amusement extravaganza that opens as early as May and doesn't close until Labor Day. In scores of hotel nightclubs, playhouses and ballrooms rivaling in splendor the smartest spots in New York, appear famous personalities of stage, screen, radio, television and the world of music. Many of them are back to visit the scene of their "first break. " And out on the fringe of dance-halls and small-hotel casinos, headliners of tomorrow are making their debuts. Many hotels cannot do with one orchestra; there are two or more, one usually specializing in Latin American rhythms. In many places, too, classes in rhumba and other dances are the thing. |
| There's nothing like competition to stimulate
value-giving in vacations, as in everything else. Among the hotels and bungalow colonies
there is a friendly and wholesome contest to be first, in each class, with everything that
can possibly contribute to "'come-back-next-year" vacation pleasure.
Consequently, each resort man-large and small-must become an accomplished entrepreneur in
entertainment, athletic and social circles. In this there is gain for guest as well as
host ! Many a star is born on Sullivan County's "Straw Hat Circuit" Among the famous personalities who give luster to the Sullivan scene, socially and professionally are Eddie Cantor, Danny Kaye, Carol Channing, Babe Didrickson Zaharias, Ed Sullivan, Sid Caesar. Robert Merrill, ]an Peerce and hosts of others are regularly seen in the county. |
